There are some beautiful views on the road between Nice and Monaco.
When deciding to come down to the South of France for a vacation, some visitors think that it’s an either/or choice between Provence and the French Riviera. But you can do both! In fact, if you want to base yourself in Aix-en-Provence, a French Riviera day trip is definitely doable.
Now, I’m not saying you can pop over to the French Riviera for lunch. It’s going to be a full day. But it’s worth it to experience just how gorgeous and varied France is, even within just a few miles. And if you’re really ambitious, you can even spend time in two other countries!
Your first stop is a two-hour drive from Aix-en-Provence, and it’s arguably the capital of the French Riviera: Nice. Watch as the scenery changes until you are cruising along the Mediterranean, fishermen and beach goers to your right, hills to your left. If you get there early enough you can still catch the famous market at the Cours Saleya in Vieux Nice, then up to Castle Hill for a bird’s eye view of this stunning city on the sea.
Head a little farther east to Eze, perched high over the Mediterranean. This gorgeous medieval village has beautifully preserved architecture, stunning views, and charming shops such as Fragonard, where you can make your own signature perfume.
Then farther east is super-luxe Monaco. Follow in the footsteps of Princess Grace, or try your luck on the hairpin turns that once a year host the Grand Prix. Gawk at the city’s expensive cars and glamorous citizens before heading back to Aix-en-Provence. Or, head just another half-hour east to step foot in Italy, via Ventimiglia, a cute border town.
